Anti-wrinkle injections contain botulinum toxin – a highly purified protein extracted from a bacterium called Botulinum clostridium.

When we make certain movements with our face such as smiling or frowning, certain specific muscles contract causing wrinkling of the overlying skin. Over time, repeated muscle contraction causes permanent lines to form which become deeper and more pronounced as we age.

Anti-wrinkle injections containing botulinum toxin work by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract resulting in a temporary relaxation of muscles. When small amount are injected into specific areas prone to forming wrinkles such as the corners of the eyes or the forehead, the relaxation of these muscles causes the overlying skin to smooth out and look less aged.

How long do anti-wrinkle injections last?

The effects typically last anywhere between 3-6 months with 4 months being the average time for most people.

Does anti-wrinkle injections prevent wrinkles?

Yes! They can delay or even prevent wrinkles from appearing if started fairly early and used regularly. If you have wrinkles already it can prevent them from becoming worse in the future. However, starting too early can be unnecessary and it is not generally recommended for people to start too young.

After you’ve had your treatment you can go about your day as you normally would, however it’s recommend that you don’t do any strenuous exercises for 24 hours.  Some areas such as the forehead may be slightly raised and red at the injection points immediately after but this tends to settle within 15-20 minutes.   Very rarely some people can get minor bruising which heals very quickly.
